Bavarian Castles: Schloss Hohenschwangau

While Schloss Neuschwanstein is the more famous of both, the one Walt Disney based his Sleeping Beauty Castle on and Koenig Ludwig II. imagined and build as his future home, Schloss Hohenschwangau stands as the residency of Ludwigs family. Growing up with a view on medival romantic of his parents, the base of his later visions were formed here.

Arriving at the place you find two main parking spaces, one of them right next to the Alpsee situated on the base of Schloss Hohenschwangau. From here you can follow the street down to the Visitor Information for the timed tickets. Bavarian Casltes

There are two ways up to the Castle, the steep stairs, that will lead you to the back entrance of the castle in no time and the wide way that leads pass the Alpsee and is a scenic, easier to walk but longer choice. Both are by far not as long as to reach Schloss Neuschwnastein with its steep way.

Hohenschwangau is the older of the castles and known as the childhood place of King Ludwig II, but actually he lived most of his life there. It is the place were he began to dream and plan his Schloss Neuschwanstein Castle, looking through the telescope and later following the building progress out of his quaters.

As enchanting as the story, the least cold representative, but very romantic style invites you in. Within the tour you can learn of its charming history. I think it is worth it!

You can see right to Schloss Neuschwanstein, in my case, snow began falling and would later get to turn into a snow storm! There is no photography allowed inside (and as I experienced some shop keepers are not happy too about it).

The photos show the way towards the steep stairs, leading away and down to the visitor area, back to the parking lot, the restaurants and center.

If you are planing on visiting Schloss Neuschwanstein, you have the opportunity for a carriage ride, that you might wish to be in when you are for some time walking upwards 🙂
